In this episode, I sit down with Pastor Hurmon Hamilton, Senior Pastor of New Beginnings Community Church and author of America's Last Best Hope: Building Bridges Across Differences, the Jesus Way.
This conversation begins with an incredible story of survival. As a baby, Hurmon suffered a devastating allergic reaction to prescribed medication that left him with severe chemical burns, reconstructive surgeries, and a year in the hospital after his heart stopped beating. His parents divorced, and he grew up carrying both physical scars and emotional wounds that shaped the way he saw himself and the world.
But what could have defined his life became the foundation of his purpose.
Hurmon shares how a courageous teacher challenged the labels placed on him, how one prayer in an eighth-grade school bathroom changed the direction of his future, and how unexpected opportunities led him from Louisiana to Grambling State University, Boston, and eventually California, where he now leads one of the most radically diverse churches in America.
We also dive into topics that affect all of us: racial reconciliation, political polarization, broken families, marriage, trauma, forgiveness, and what it really takes to build relationships that last. Hurmon opens up about nearly sabotaging his own marriage because of unresolved pain, the hidden burdens pastors carry, and why he believes Jesus' example offers a better way forward in an increasingly divided culture.
This isn't just a conversation about faith. It's about healing, resilience, humility, and learning to choose people over labels. Whether you're navigating broken relationships, searching for purpose, or wondering if unity is still possible, I think you'll find something meaningful in Hurmon's story.
At its core, The CARLOS WATSON Podcast is about resilience, fearlessness, and the conversations we're often told not to have. If an episode challenges you, encourages you, or helps you see the world differently, we'd love for you to be part of the community.
